Coal India shares surged nearly 4% to ₹417.85 after the state-run miner reported that August coal supplies jumped roughly 5.5%, giving fresh legs to a stock that's already been on a tear this year. The move comes right on the heels of Coal India filing its draft prospectus for the Mahanadi Coalfields IPO, an offer-for-sale of a 10% stake through 66.18 crore shares, extending the company's subsidiary-listing spree that has already seen BCCL and CMPDI debut on the exchanges this year. Mahanadi Coalfields alone produced 218.31 million tonnes of coal in FY26, accounting for nearly a quarter of India's non-coking coal output and 28% of Coal India's total production, underlining just how significant this asset is. Brokerage house Nuvama upgraded the stock to "Hold" and raised its target to ₹454 from ₹396, betting on a volume recovery, while the broader 24-analyst average target of ₹463.71 still sits comfortably above current levels within its 52-week range of ₹368.65-₹491.25. The stock's one-year and five-year returns of nearly 10% and over 24% respectively suggest today's pop is part of a longer uptrend rather than a one-off spike.
