Axis Bank shares slipped 1.52% to close at Rs 1229, even after the private lender posted a robust set of first-quarter numbers that saw standalone net profit jump 22.5% YoY to Rs 7,114 crore. Net interest income grew 8% to Rs 14,646 crore, and provisions and contingencies fell sharply by 43.7% to Rs 2,223 crore, pointing to improving asset quality even as the gross NPA ratio eased to 1.28% from 1.57% a year earlier, though the absolute gross NPA figure rose to Rs 17,125 crore. The one soft spot in an otherwise strong quarter was margins, with net interest margin slipping to 3.46% from 3.73% a year ago as deposit costs continued to climb. Brokerage Jefferies flagged the bank's 19% loan growth and healthy asset quality as key positives, raising its FY27 EPS estimate by 2%, even as the stock trades well within its 52-week range of Rs 1,041.30 to Rs 1,418.30.
